Optical rectification in lithium niobate and in organic crystals is the workhorse for strong-field THz generation and has traditionally required amplifiers running at a kilohertz or below. We drive these crystals with ytterbium systems at tens of kilohertz to megahertz and pump powers up to 500 W. Measurements that once took days take hours — and some experiments become possible for the first time.
