Ytterbium lasers give us average power but not the shortest pulses — which are needed for applications. Multipass cells close that gap: they broaden the spectrum at high transmission and excellent beam quality, and scale to energies other schemes cannot reach. We push compression toward higher pulse energies and average powers, and characterize the output in space and time — where the couplings that matter for applications tend to hide.
