Filamentation and plasma dynamics

Above a critical peak power laser pulses collapse into a self-guided filament and ionise the medium they travel through. At high repetition rates the gas cannot recover between pulses: the filament reshapes its own environment, and the process becomes something other than the sum of single shots. Combining high pulse energy with high repetition rate for the first time, we measure these gas dynamics time-resolved and model what we see.
